A Fan's tribute to Harry Potter series
I remember the first time i held a copy of the first book in my hand. I was ten and had no clue about the huge impact it would leave on me... And i dont mean the impact that was left when it was thrown on my head by my lovely sister from whom I had stolen it in the first place. Ah... memories.... Getting back to Harry Potter.... the mania may be dying out after the release of the last book in 2007 but it has rocked the world leaving behing a legacy that will be one tough act to follow. The statistics says it all - the Harry Potter series has sold over 350 million copies worldwide and has been translated in 64 languages including some languages even Dumbeldore can't speak in. The books have broken many records and the author J.K. Rowling has won numerous awards. She has also become one of the richest women in England giving competition to the Queen herself..... God save the queen! If you havent read the book I suggest that you should first give yourself a smack on the head and then beg or borrow from someone to give you a copy. I will say this to you with full confidence... everyone who reads the books will love it. If you are among the many people who have read and enjoyed the series then read on my fellow muggles....
There are many things that I love about the series.... I love the fact that there is a possibility that such a parallel world of magic can exist and even ordinary objects remind me of this. Oh the number of times that i have held the broom in my hand half expecting it to fly.... or when I drank 5 cups of tea so I could read the tea leaves at the bottom of the cup (much to my mom's frustration).... No luck there. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but my point is that reading the books makes even the simplest of things appear magical... Imagination does the rest..
Talking about imagination, there is no magical world without the wonderful creatures that are described in the books. Most of them are mythological in origin (werewolves, basilisk, dragons, pixies,....) some are brilliant (Threstals) while some are downright bizarre(Knarls???) The book 'Fantastic Beasts and where to find them' is a wonderful textbook which describes each and every creature in the magical world and was written by Rowling for charity. I enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to all Potter fans.
And who can forget about the characters. Everyone has a favourite... Maybe Harry or Ron or Hermione or even Voldemort for that matter. There is something unique about all the characters which helps us to relate to them and also their experiences... I, for example, relate to Ginny because of her witty, fearless and caring nature. But my favourite character will always remain - Luna Lovegood. Even the dark characters have a wonderful human quality to them and Snape is a perfect example of that fact (Note: I always knew he was innocent) The characters and their love lives have also kept us entertained especially the Ron - Hermione pair. The experiences that the characters face are so familiar to us teens and that's why it is such a hit with us.
The greatest thing about the book is the fact that it is loved by so many people.. young and old, students and teachers, book lovers and non-book lovers as well. I have witnessed people who have never touched a book in their lives become addicted to reading after watching the movies on the series. The whole world is talking about it and never has a book united so many people across the world. Also in my case Harry Potter has started many of my friendships and has led to many happy memories especially during lecture time. Here is to the book that changed the world including mine... Cheers!
