Living life in Mono

A vocabulary lesson.... Monaural Hearing.... Till now i didn't know there was a word 'my condition'... I have been deaf in the right ear since birth or possibly as long ago as I can remember. It used to bother me at first, but now it doesn't any more. Hell, half the time I don't even remember which ear it is and neither does my friends. The wierdest thing is I dont know wether I should regard my self as "having a disability" when it comes to fill in college application forms.

But despite the fact that it has ceased bothering me, it continues to present its own unique set of problems.

The biggest, of course, is that I frequently misunderstand what people are saying to me. For example,
[Friend]: "Hi!"
[Me]: "I'm fine, how are you?"

Also my conversations usually consists of "What did u say...?" or "Sorry, were you talking to me?" or "Huh?".

Whenever Im with my friends, I have to always sit to their left or else its kinda lame to laugh at a joke that I didnt hear.

Sometimes I've been labeled a snob or made someone cry just because I didn't say "hi" or reply to someone who tried to talked to me first.

And when someone's cell phone rings I don't have a clue where it is at! Sometimes I stand in the middle of the room and just turn around in a circle to try to tell where the sound is coming from.

I walk into a room and if someone calls my name I look like an idiot walking in circles trying to figure out where the sound is! Head shadow effect - the total inability to hear sound from a particular direction.

But when Life throws Lemon at u...u make lemonade.......!

Well I've accepted to live with my gift...and yes... it is a Gift that improves my other senses overall... Honestly! I have super hearing in my other ear!! I have always been into music from a very young age, and I seriously think that has a lot to do with how strong the one ear has become to overcompensate for not having two!I hear little things in music that most people will never pick up. It really makes you a good music critic.

Another good part is that when i lay at my right side, Im not able to here a thing when im a sleep... I also love being able to sleep anywhere at any time regardless of the noise.. A huge blessing when there r fire crackers going off at odd timings in the night during some of the Indian festivals.

Also if someone is talking to me and I don't want to talk back I just turn my bad ear towards them poof! Instant soundproofing! Comes in handy when my parents are yelling at me about something or the other.
